Sheffield United have continued their busy winter transfer window with the addition of experienced midfielder Joe Rothwell, who has agreed an 18-month deal with the Blades.
Rothwell arrives from Rangers, bringing with him a proven pedigree at Championship level. The 29-year-old has twice won promotion from the division and most recently lifted the Championship title with Leeds United last season, before a short spell north of the border with the Scottish giants.
United boss Chris Wilder had earlier today confirmed that a deal was close, and spoke warmly about the midfielder’s qualities and long-standing appeal.
“Joe is in situ. Hopefully we can get that over the line,” Wilder said. “He’s somebody that gives us that strength in depth in the midfield department. He’s someone I’ve liked for quite a long time.”
Sheffield United All Set For Play-off Push

Rothwell’s arrival makes him United’s fourth signing of the January transfer window and underlines Wilder’s clear focus on bolstering squad depth for the second half of the campaign. The Blades moved early in the window with the signing of Ki-Jana Hoever, before following that up with loan moves for Leo Hjelde and Kalvin Phillips earlier today.
Phillips became United’s third loan arrival of the window, following Hoever and Hjelde, with all three additions aimed at increasing competition and versatility within the squad.
With several problem positions now addressed, Sheffield United will be hoping their winter business provides the platform for a strong push up the Championship table in the remaining months of the season.
