Ben Brereton Diaz has made a sensational return to Sheffield United, rejoining the club on loan from Southampton with an option to make the move permanent in the summer for £10 million, according to Alex Crook.
This marks the Chilean international’s second stint at Bramall Lane, a move warmly welcomed by the club’s manager, Chris Wilder, who has been an admirer of the forward’s talents since his first spell.
After impressing in the Premier League with United last season, Brereton Diaz earned attention from several clubs, ultimately signing for Southampton in the summer for a significant fee from La Liga side Villarreal. However, his time on the south coast has been less fruitful, featuring in just ten Premier League games this season. Despite his limited impact at Southampton, Wilder has kept a keen eye on the player, eager to bring him back to Bramall Lane.
“This is a great fit for everyone,” Wilder told the club’s website. “Ben will be an important player for us in the second half of the season. In a tough campaign, he was great for us last season, and we would have loved to have kept him, but the Southampton move was too good to turn down.”
Brereton Diaz on Rejoining Sheffield United
Speaking about his return on SUTV, Brereton Diaz expressed excitement and enthusiasm for reuniting with the Blades.
“I’m absolutely buzzing,” he said. “I really enjoyed it last season. I know the staff and some of the players, so as soon as I found out this could be a possibility, it excited me. I’m really excited to be back.”
Brereton Diaz also spoke highly of his relationship with Wilder, crediting the manager for his development during his previous spell at Sheffield United.
“We’ve stayed in contact since last time. He was brilliant with me, and I know the staff well, having worked with Jack Lester in the past. I loved it here. I think Chris has done an amazing job, and he’s someone I want to play for.”
Reflecting on the changes within the Sheffield United squad since his last stint, Brereton Diaz acknowledged the challenges the club faced in the summer but praised the current team’s resilience. “Last season, the squad was a good squad, and I got on with everyone. A lot of players left in the summer, and it might’ve looked like a scary time at Sheffield United, but they’ve done brilliantly. The gaffer and his staff have built a strong team, and it’s showing this season. The players have been amazing.”
Blades Set For More Additions?

Meanwhile, the Blades are also reportedly closing in on signing Leicester City striker Tom Cannon, per reports from Fraser Fletcher. The TEAMtalk journalist has claimed United target Jonjoe Kenny has agreed to join the Blades on a four and a half year deal from Bundesliga 2 outfit Hertha Berlin.
The former Everton right-back has been a standout performer for the German club this season having taken up an interesting role as a falseback in the right-back position. Kenny has been given the freedom to drift centrally into a central midfield position, conducting play in the right half-space. This has led to him posting some excellent passing and creative statistics this term.
