After getting their Championship campaign off to a positive start away from home, Sheffield United play their first home game of the season on Tuesday evening as they host Wrexham in the Carabao Cup.
In his preview of the league cup clash, Chris Wilder has admitted that the Blades may be forced into resting some of the players who started in United’s victory over Preston North End.
Speaking to SUTV he said, “I’m not going to try and kid anybody. Because of the players coming in during the period they have done – Alfie and a couple of others were blowing after 70 minutes on Friday, we have to be careful on our team selection. If we put the young boys in we have full faith in them.”
It could be a case of the likes of Femi Seriki, Sydie Peck and Louie Marsh getting starts against Wrexham, and the trio have more than earned that opportunity with their consistent performances throughout pre-season.
Chris Wilder on the Sheffield United performance against Preston
In reflection of United’s win at Deepdale, the Blades chief spoke about the first win of the season at Preston.
“I always think when you’re involved to think it’s a little bit tighter, and I think neutrals thought we were more in control than maybe we did at the time. You always have that pessimistic attitude towards it that at any time something can happen – a long throw, corner, penalty, counter attack.
“There’s certain aspects we need to work on but I think overall, possibly most changes in the 92, to hit the ground running in the manner we did was very pleasing. It wasn’t a snatch and grab, it was very controlled from start to finish. There’s things we can improve on and I’m sure we will do, the connection of the front 4 – we got in some fabulous positions and should’ve been a little bit tidier. Getting the 2nd goal was brilliant from Gus’ point of view as well because it wasn’t an incredible night for him and you laugh and smile about it after but he’ll be better for us and the team will grow.
“Out of possession I thought we were outstanding, the duels we won, the first and second balls, our mobility and athleticism was first class and ultimately that allows you to dictate the game. I believe there was a 3rd or 4th goal in there if we had been a little bit more clinical and made better decisions but overall it was fabulous.”
The Blades are also at home on Saturday afternoon when they host Queens Park Rangers in their first home match of the Championship season, and they could have two new signings ready for that clash.
Jesurun Rak-Sakyi is set to be confirmed by the club and Michael Cooper could also be between the sticks if everything goes well. Mark McAdam is reporting that Sheffield United have agreed a deal of £2 million for the Plymouth Argyle shot-stopper.
