Estudiantes’ Benjamin Rollheiser is poised to finalise a move to Benfica, despite interest from Premier League clubs Newcastle, Sheffield United, and Burnley. This information comes from the winger’s agent, Carlos Espinoza.
Rollheiser has drawn comparisons to Lionel Messi for his tendency to cut in from the right onto his left boot, but some suggest a more fitting comparison might be Angel di Maria.
Angel di Maria made a comeback for a second spell at Benfica last season. However, at 35 years old, the Portuguese giants are looking to replace their seasoned winger with a younger model in Rollheiser, who is 12 years Di Maria’s junior.
Newcastle, Burnley, and Sheffield United have expressed interest in Rollheiser over the past few months. Yet, Espinoza seems to be extinguishing any hopes from the Premier League trio, as Benfica secures the signing of one of the most promising talents in the South American market once again.
Rollheiser’s agent told Globe Esporte “we are closing with Benfica”.
Rollheiser had an impressive 2023 Argentinian campaign for Estudiantes, scoring 12 goals and providing eight assists.
It seemed strange to me that Sheffield United were even linked with this bright young Argentinian star in the first place. Although it’s good to see the Blades scouting the South American market, the very best talents would surely never come our way, so it does seem like a bit of wasted time.
