“No Excuses” – Wilder Pulls No Punches After Sheffield United’s Unbeaten Run Comes to an End

Sheffield United’s unbeaten run was brought to an abrupt end on Friday night as the Blades slipped to a 2-0 defeat away at West Bromwich Albion.

United began the contest on the front foot and looked the more assured side during the opening exchanges. Djibril Soumaré set the early tone with his intensity off the ball, pressing high and unsettling the Albion back line. That early pressure led to a slick passage of play involving Patrick Bamford and Tyrese Campbell, which opened space for Gustavo Hamer. The midfielder tested Joe Wildsmith with a powerful effort, forcing the Albion goalkeeper into a fine early save as the Blades signalled their intent.

Despite United’s encouraging start, Albion remained a threat and almost took the lead just before the break. A knockdown inside the box fell kindly for Aune Heggebo, but the striker failed to capitalise, slicing his effort high and wide from a promising position to spare United at the interval.

The warning signs were there and Albion emerged from the dressing room and took the lead five minutes into the second half. Heggebo was central to the move, linking play intelligently before shifting the ball wide to Campbell on the right. Campbell’s low delivery was met by the striker in stride, and Heggebo made no mistake, finishing clinically at the near post.

United’s night went from bad to worse soon after. Losing possession inside the Albion half, the hosts broke quickly on the counter. A ball in behind released Karlan Grant, and although McGuinness appeared to be clipped as he fell, the referee waved play on. United’s appeals for a foul were ignored, further fuelling the visitors’ frustration.

From that point on, the Blades struggled to mount any meaningful response. Their attacking play lacked conviction, and despite plenty of effort, there was little to trouble Wildsmith as Albion saw the game out comfortably.

After the match, Blades boss Chris Wilder delivered a brutally honest assessment of his side’s performance, offering no excuses for a difficult night.

“I didn’t see it coming,” Wilder admitted to SUTV. “I thought first half we were pretty good. We have to be more clinical and should be ahead at half-time.

“That’s when you need to be at your ruthless best and if it doesn’t come first half, it has to come second half. We’ve just allowed them to go and dominate the game and we never looked like getting back in it. It felt as if they just thought the game would come to them and they didn’t have to do the fundamental aspects that you have to do to win a game of football at any level, and most importantly, to win a game of football as a Sheffield United player.

“So I apologise straight away for that. We have to own it. As good as the Stoke City performance was, and it was, and maybe we didn’t get the credit for that, we need to stick our chest out and accept every criticism that comes our way for a second-half performance that was miles off it. I mean miles off it.

“It’s nothing to do with the physical part of it. We’ve changed, we’ve freshened it up. They had the same schedule. It rests with us. There are zero excuses, zero excuses on refereeing decisions, zero excuses on everything.”

Sheffield United now taste defeat for the first time since early November. They will now have to pick themselves up and dust themselves down ready to host Birmingham City next weekend.
