Sheffield United wasted no time asserting themselves on Sunday afternoon, with an intense start that caught Watford off guard.
Within the first minute, Callum O’Hare was instrumental in creating the opening goal. O’Hare’s determination and skill saw him drive to the byline, outmanoeuvring Watford’s Francisco Sierralta. His effort resulted in a scramble that ended with Watford’s goalkeeper, Daniel Bachmann, inadvertently turning the ball into his own net. The goal, officially recorded as a Bachmann own goal, was a just reward for O’Hare’s excellent play.
The early strike set the tone for a fiercely contested match, with Sheffield United displaying resilience but also the ability to control a game from start to finish against a top Championship side.
United had chances to extend their lead. The most notable opportunity came in the 16th minute when a slick move down the left by Kieffer Moore led to a foul on Oli Arblaster by former Blade, Yasser Larouci. The referee pointed to the spot, and Moore stepped up to take the penalty. However, his well-placed effort towards the bottom right corner was brilliantly saved by Bachmann, keeping Watford within touching distance.
Throughout the match, United’s defence remained resolute, limiting Watford to few clear-cut opportunities. Chris Wilder’s men were disciplined and organised, ensuring that their opponents, who have been prolific in front of goal this season, were unable to find a way through.
Sheffield United boss on the performance and win against Watford
Speaking after the match to SUTV, Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder praised his team’s performance, both on and off the ball. “I talk about a proper Sheffield United performance, and that was exactly what we delivered today. We had to defend, tackle, fight, and scrap, and you saw all those attributes. We dominated the game, and when we needed to see it out, we did so with confidence.”
Wilder was particularly pleased with his side’s ability to limit Watford’s attacking threat. “I never felt we were in danger. We played our game, never panicked, and even late on, we forced errors when we needed to. Our shape out of possession was just as pleasing as the great football we played.”
As the international break approaches, Wilder acknowledged the challenges it brings, with several key players set to be absent due to international duty. However, he emphasised the importance of giving the squad some time to recover and recharge after a demanding start to the season.
Amidst all this, a report from Alan Nixon claims that the club’s new ownership is reportedly prioritising securing Wilder’s future at Bramall Lane with a new deal. His handling of the team during this period has been commendable, and tying him down to a long-term contract is seen as essential to the club’s ongoing plans.
