“We’ve got a target on our backs” – Sheffield United boss hints at strong lineup to face Barnsley

The Oakwell Stadium will be the battleground on Tuesday night as Barnsley, representing League One, take on Championship side Sheffield United in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

This South Yorkshire derby promises to be a thrilling encounter with both sides eager to progress further in the competition, and while the league is a priority for both, Blades boss Chris Wilder has hinted at picking a very strong side.

United advanced to the second round with an impressive 4-2 victory over Wrexham. The Blades demonstrated their attacking prowess, but it was the performance of young midfielder Sydie Peck that truly caught the eye. Peck’s commanding presence in the heart of midfield has been a topic of discussion among the fans since that display. The 19-year-old may be in line for another start in the competition.

Chris Wilder previews Barnsley vs Sheffield United

Blades boss Chris Wilder has hinted at fielding a stronger side against Barnsley compared to the lineup that faced Wrexham. Acknowledging the intensity of local derbies, Wilder emphasised, in his press conference, the importance of securing a win against their neighbours.

“There will be a mix. It will be a stronger group than what went out there against Wrexham. We want to win and we understand the challenge ahead of us in a local derby.”

Reflecting on the upcoming match against Barnsley, Wilder expressed, “we’d have loved to be at home but it’s just up the road, so minimal travel for us but a tough one. There is always that extra spice involved when you play the local clubs; they’ll want to turn us over,” he said. Wilder also acknowledged that the home side will want to produce an upset, “they’ll want to stick one over us, and we’ve got a target on our backs. We understand that, and the players will understand the challenges ahead of them.”

United have sold out the away end for their short trip down the road and the Blades chief has praised the upcoming away following. “4,500 United fans [will be] behind that goal. A fantastic following and I think that shows you what the supporters think about the competition, the tie and about our progression as well.”

Barnsley will be looking to overturn recent history when they host Sheffield United. The Blades completed a league double over the Tykes during the 2021-22 Championship campaign, and Barnsley’s last victory in this fixture came back in 2018.

Blades face competition for Irish forward

In other developments, Sunderland have reportedly made a £5 million bid for Leicester City striker Tom Cannon. However, Sheffield United, along with Norwich City and Stoke City, are also expected to make offers for the promising forward before Friday’s transfer deadline, according to John Percy. The race for Cannon’s signature is set to go down to the wire with transfer deadline day fast approaching.
