Midfielder’s contract situation explained as Sheffield United add forward depth

Since the beginning of May there has been plenty of speculation around Gustavo Hamer’s future at Sheffield United due to him having a release clause written into his contract.

Despite a terrible Premier League season for the Blades collectively, Hamer was really one of very few positive aspects of that campaign – he provided ten goal contributions in his debut season in the top flight.

Heading into the summer, Blades fans were fearful of losing the Dutchman because of an apparent release clause written into his contract. However, Unitedites shall fear no more…

Hamer’s release clause has now expired which means that the original agreed upon release fee now cannot be triggered by any club, as exclusively revealed by Sheff United Way. Hamer’s release clause only applies during the summer transfer window in a season when we are relegated from the Premier League to the Championship. If we remain in the Championship next season, it won’t be valid.

In other news, United have now confirmed the signing of free agent Tyrese Campbell on a three-year deal. The pacey forward has scored 31 goals and served up 16 assists in 142 Championship appearances. One downside of the striker is his injury record. According to Transfermarkt, Campbell has missed 68 games due to injury in the last four seasons.

Sheffield United add Tyrese Campbell to the squad

Chris Wilder spoke to the club’s official website after adding depth to his forward line. “There’s been a lot of work behind the scenes this week to make these deals happen, to ensure we bolster our numbers with quality for the start of the season.

“Like any deal, it doesn’t just happen overnight, and similar to Harry, Alfie and many others, our work on getting Tyrese here started long before this week.

“Tyrese is someone I’ve liked for a long time. As an opposition manager I always saw something in him which made me think I’d like to work with him one day, so I’m delighted to bring him to Bramall Lane.”

Campbell, the 24-year-old, spoke on SUTV about his move to the Blades. “I was keen to get here before the start of the season, get training and be around the team.

“If you are player, looking at the club, anyone would be proud to play here. It is a team with a lot of ambition, it is a great squad who are capable of pushing right at the top of the league which is where I want to be.

“To be wanted by Sheffield United, as soon as I heard that, it was my goal to be a Sheffield United player.”

United are close to adding another player before their next league game against QPR next Saturday.
