Yorkshire rivals set to battle for defender’s signature

Daily Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards has suggested that Leeds United and Sheffield United are poised to compete directly this month in the pursuit of Everton’s Ben Godfrey.

At 26 years old, Godfrey has participated in merely three competitive matches for Everton in the current season across various competitions. His limited playing time, with just 13 Premier League appearances in the previous season, has fueled speculations about a potential departure.

Initially, Leeds United, AC Milan, and Sheffield United have expressed interest in the defender. However, the latest update indicates that Yorkshire rivals Leeds United and Sheffield United are set to engage in a head-to-head battle for Godfrey’s signature.

The Daily Telegraph journalist claimed on the Transfer Gossip Daily podcast:

So there are three options there. I would choose AC Milan all day every day. But I have a feeling this will come to a straight shootout between Sheffield United and Leeds United.”

Even with the allure of Champions League football, the belief is that both Sheffield United and Daniel Farke’s team have a higher likelihood of securing Ben Godfrey’s services this month. Despite the risk of both clubs potentially being in the Championship next season, the prospect of more guaranteed playing time seems higher at either Sheffield United or Leeds United compared to playing for AC Milan.

The Blades are clearly targeting a new centre-back this window having already been linked with a move for another out of favour defender Chris Mepham.
