Chris Wilder, a lifelong Unitedite, was revealed as the Blades’ manager on Tuesday afternoon, having committed to an 18-month deal.
Returning after managing the club for almost five years between May 2016 and March 2021, Wilder takes charge of a team in dire straits at the bottom of the Premier League. Sheffield United have endured a challenging start to the season, accumulating just five points from 14 matches, with only one victory to their name.
Back-to-back losses to Bournemouth and Burnley have heightened concern amongst the supporters, but the 56-year-old has been tasked with the responsibility of uniting the club and enhancing results in the face of growing discontent.
Wilder stated during his first press conference back as the United boss:
“We are under no illusions that it’s an incredible first game to be involved in, but we have the lift of 33,000 at Bramall Lane under the lights.
“We need a huge performance. If we do that, we can be competitive and we need to be more competitive than what we have been.”
The Blades face a very difficult and busy December starting on Wednesday evening, and then they host Brentford at the weekend before travelling to Chelsea the following Saturday. Sheffield United will have to start picking up points very quickly under Chris Wilder.
