Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom may be attentive to developments in the Netherlands as there are reports suggesting that Ajax are contemplating loaning out Chuba Akpom in the upcoming January transfer window.
The Blades expressed interest in the forward during the summer following their promotion to the Premier League but were unable to proceed due to financial constraints once Ajax pursued the move.
However, Akpom, who was last season’s Championship top scorer and player of the year with Middlesbrough, has encountered difficulties securing playing time at the Johan Cruyff Arena. He has started just twice so far and made 11 appearances off the bench, despite scoring five times in his last five outings.
The Dutch giants are reportedly open to allowing him to depart on a temporary basis in January. Fulham and Crystal Palace have enquired about him according to TeamTalk.
Paul Heckingbottom has three more foreign loans available to use. But if Sheffield United are to bring anybody in they will have to see departures, or leave someone out of the squad when they have to be resubmitted.
Could last season’s epic duo of Cameron Archer and Chuba Akpom be reunited in January? Would it even make a difference to United’s Premier League survival chances?
