An interesting subplot for the upcoming match as Sheffield United will face Tommy Doyle, who had a successful loan spell with the Blades last season. Doyle made a significant impact during that time, contributing with three goals and four assists in 33 appearances, helping to secure promotion.
Due to financial constraints, Sheffield United couldn’t secure a deal for Doyle, who instead joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on a season-long loan from Manchester City. However, he has had limited opportunities at Molineux, making only five appearances this season and starting in the Carabao Cup.
Speaking about his time with the Blades, Doyle stated:
“When you achieve stuff it obviously makes things a lot better but it was a great period for me and a great stepping stone to lead me to where I am now.”
He later told The Athletic “It was incredible”.
There seems to be a debate among United supporters about the choice to re-sign James McAtee instead of Doyle. Some feel that Doyle’s energy, dynamism and ability to beat a press in the midfield has been a miss. While others argue that McAtee offers creativity and penetration in the final third.
One thing is for certain, the 22-year-old will undoubtedly be warmly welcomed back to Bramall Lane on Saturday.
