Captain John Egan departed the field with a limp during Sheffield United’s 2-0 loss to West Ham, adding to the woes of the Blades, who remain winless and stuck at the bottom of the Premier League table. Egan was forced off injured in the second half after an awkward landing at a corner. The Blades captain was seen leaving the London stadium on crutches.
While the Blades did manage to show improvement compared to their humiliating 8-0 defeat at home against Newcastle just six days earlier, the bar for improvement was admittedly not very high after that dismal performance.
United have to cut out their “basic mistakes”, that’s what pundit Micah Richards said during the latest episode of Match of The Day.
But things don’t get any better for Paul Heckingbottom because the status of his captain does not look good as they await results of a scan.
Although the start of the campaign hasn’t been particularly great for the defence, potentially losing John Egan is a huge blow. Sheffield United travel down to London for their next game when they face Fulham at Craven Cottage, it remains to be seen whether their captain will be available for that game.
With Luton Town winning on Saturday, Burnley and the Blades are still looking for their first win. Burnley and Luton play each other on Tuesday night meaning Sheffield United could be the only team left to not achieve three points in the Premier League.
