Blades injury update ahead of Man City meeting

Sheffield United boss provided an injury update as the Blades are preparing to lock horns with treble winners Manchester City.

Paul Heckingbottom revealed that Anis Slimane was absent from Friday’s game against Nottingham Forest due to a hamstring injury, while there was a risk associated with playing George Baldock.

Heckingbottom detailed Slimane’s injury: “He has a slight problem with his hamstring. Nothing serious, just probably something we are going to have to manage until it settles down.” [Yorkshire Live]

Among several players who didn’t make the trip to the City Ground, the Greek international had encountered a calf issue towards the end of the opening day match against Crystal Palace and subsequently didn’t participate in the 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest. However, he is expected to feature against Man City.

Jayden Bogle was not ready to return after suffering from a knee problem during most of the pre-season. Therefore, Ben Osborn took the right-wingback position as Heckingbottom did not want to risk aggravating Baldock’s calf injury.

Given Sheffield United’s current lack of attacking strength, the Blades’ manager was optimistic about Oli McBurnie’s return after recovering from a foot injury obtained during the summer camp in Portugal. Despite McBurnie’s return to training, he felt that the previous game was too early for his comeback. But there is a chance he could make the bench against Guardiola’s side.

“He trained but is another one who has missed pre-season. As you normally get, a bit of stiffness, soreness. I’ve waited this long, I’ll wait another game.”

Meanwhile, Vinícius Souza and Bénie Traoré both experienced fatigue-related issues, leading them to be substituted in the second half of Friday’s match due to cramps.
