Sheffield United to target a deal for Joël Piroe

Sheffield United have identified Swansea City striker Joël Piroe as a plan B if they cannot agree a deal for Aston Villa’s Cameron Archer, according to Alan Nixon. The Blades had a £10m bid rejected today by Villa.

Nixon reports that a deal for Archer is expensive and complicated as the midlands club are demanding a large fee and an unattractive buy-back clause. However, the Dutch forward, Piroe, is out of contract next summer and willing to see out his current contract – a deal for him could be equally complicated.

Piroe has been a goalscoring machine ever since signing for Swansea City in the summer of 2021. The 24-year-old bagged 22 goals in 45 Championship appearances in the 21/22 campaign. Remarkably, he only registered an expected goal tally of 12.02, outperforming his xG number by 10 goals [Infogol]. This led many to believe that he would be a one season wonder, however, he proved otherwise last season. In the previous campaign, Piroe scored 18 goals in 42 Championship games.

The Dutchman has caught the eye of many smart scouts throughout his early career. He was linked with a move to Leicester City last summer, but a deal never materialised.
