Alan Nixon suggests that the Blades may secure the 27-year-old’s services for approximately £8m. Paul Heckingbottom holds a strong admiration for the forward. With a shortage of attacking options, the inclusion of Akpom would offer some relief to United’s depth issues. Akpom missed pre-season with Middlesbrough, but he has been in light training, and he was deemed fit enough for the bench during Boro’s first Championship game of the season.
Sheffield United are yet to formally bid for last season’s Championship top scorer, but they are aware of what it takes. Any deal to acquire Akpom will come at a big price: a big chunk of wages, bonuses and transfer fee.
Paul Heckingbottom stated in a recent interview that he wants one more player in before the opening Premier League game, against Crystal Palace. It’s looking likely that the club will step up their efforts to sign Vinícius Souza and/or Chuba Akpom before Saturday.
Following Iliman Ndiaye’s departure from United, commanding a fee that could increase to £20m, a significant gap needs addressing. The Senegal international impressively tallied 25 goals and assists in the Championship last season. In contrast, Akpom made a notable contribution to 30 goals.
